Algebra 2:

Principles of Secondary Mathematics

Algebra 2: Principles of Secondary Mathematics builds upon the conceptual foundations of Algebra 1 to challenge students with an in-depth exploration of advanced algebraic topics. This rigorous, mastery-based course promotes independent learning by providing robust resources and worked solutions that empower students to reason through complex problems and persevere when they get “unstuck”.

This program utilizes the modern lesson structure developed for the Principles of Secondary Mathematics series, which differs from the traditional format found in our legacy courses. In Algebra 2, students engage with multiple videos per lesson, complete scaffolded guided notes, and master nationally expected topics aligned with current state standards.

Placement

Your student may be ready for Algebra 2: Principles of Secondary Mathematics if they can:

  • Demonstrate mastery of content from Algebra 1: Principles of Secondary Mathematics or another Algebra 1 course with a similar scope and sequence.
  • Proficiently solve multi-step and literal equations.
  • Graph linear inequalities on a coordinate plane.
  • Solve systems of equations using algebraic methods.
  • Simplify polynomial expressions and perform various types of factoring.
  • Apply exponent rules and simplify radical expressions.
  • Understand functions, including identifying domain and range and describing parabolas.

The Math-U-See placement tool is designed to help ensure proper initial placement and will give you a clear indication if your student is ready for Algebra 2: Principles of Secondary Mathematics. If you are unsure of your student’s readiness, the Readiness & Review for Algebra 2 (RRA2) is available to evaluate and review critical prerequisite concepts.

Readiness Guidelines

After you determine your student is ready for Algebra 2: Principles of Secondary Mathematics, we recommend using the Readiness & Review for Algebra 2. These materials cover essential Algebra 1 concepts and skills needed for success in an advanced algebra course that may have been forgotten or require further depth.

Generally, students begin with the Readiness Check, which functions as a pre-test to identify specific areas where they may need additional support. Based on those results, instructors can then assign targeted review lessons to ensure a solid foundation before beginning the full course.
