More St. Louis

A peek into the St. Louis Home Education Expo

Also a short interview with Phil Bankester after one of Steve’s family talks

Anna, over at Just to name a few, wrote a great blog post about the St. Louis Homeschool Convention. I’ve copied a few excepts but you can click here to read the full post.Excerpt #1

This last weekend I attended the St. Louis Homeschool EXPO I took the kids with me on Friday and they attended a kids expo where they played and made crafts and sang songs and watched puppets and did all sorts of things. The absolute highlight of the day, for my kids especially, was getting to meet Mr. Steve. Mr. Steve is actually Mr. Steve Demme, who is the founder of Math U See, the math curriculum we use. My kids LOVE Mr. Steve. The program comes with DVDs that Mr. Steve actually teaches on. The idea is that you watch the DVD and then do the book/block work, so my kids see Mr. Steve pretty regularly, and are always thrilled to see his smiling face on their TV.

Excerpt # 2

I finally gathered my children and all the paraphernalia that I was carrying around and said our goodbyes. We headed outside to walk to our car and The Girl looked up at me and said, “I didn’t realize that he was a real person!” I could do nothing but laugh.Today she drew a picture of Mr. Steve and Ethan swinging her through the air. I let her know that we would send it off to him. He will be getting fan mail from my kids, I bet he hadn’t planned on that when he wrote his math curriculum.

A Sandwich or Not a Sandwich - That is the Question

Here is a word problem taken from one of our books that has caused a little confusion.

Jenna ordered four fish sandwiches and one hamburger. How many sandwiches did she order in all?

Jenny at Home is Where You Start From, wondered,

Mommy thought the answer was 4 - since clearly it was stated there were 4 sandwiches and 1 hamburger.

Demi was of the opinion that the answer was 5 - because a hamburger has 2 pieces of bread and a filling in between.

I asked Miriam, who wrote said word problem, for the story...

One of the most interesting things about writing word problems is finding how differently we all think. When I go out for fast food and ask my husband what kind of sandwich he wants, he can choose beef, chicken or fish. Hey, he can even choose a veggie burger ( not that he would!). But, I heard from my editor in England that this question sent her friends into hysterical laughter. I thought it was just a UK thing until I saw this post. Any suggestions for what kind of sandwich to substitute for the hamburger?

-Miriam

Your opinion and suggestions are needed, leave a comment and opine whether a Hamburger is a sandwich or not and place your choice for a substitute sandwich.

If we use your suggestion I’ll send you a Math-U-See tote bag :-)

Let the comments begin!

Florida Home Education Week

I was reading your blogs today and read a good one at Color Me Pink.

For the second year in a row, Governor Crist has declared a Home Education Week. March 30-April 6, 2008 is Florida Home Education Week. You can view his declaration here. You know what I love best about this? Our 5th anniversary of homeschooling coincides with Home Education week! March 31, 2003 is our official homeschool starting date. We’re so avant-garde!

It’s neat to see home education recognized for it’s contributions to the great state of Florida.

Resale Value of Math-U-See

The Thinking mother wrote a great blog post about the resale value of Math-U-See, here is what she said,

I can’t believe the prices that these are selling for, on EBay.

The average selling price for a USED (but complete) “starter set” is $28.25. A brand new set bought over the internet direct from MUS is $30.00. The crazier thing is that one auction was for full price and two auctions of USED sets exceeded the price of new sets. I don’t understand this!

Meanwhile complete sets of used “completer sets” averaged $29.67, while full price new is $35.

Prices for incomplete sets were only slightly lower. I am amazed that people are paying such high prices for used items for which they also must pay shipping. It is not as if the sellers were offering free shipping or some other perk! Why are people not buying directly from Math-U-See?

I’ve seen this myself on ebay and other places, I once saw a classic Intermediate teachers set going for over a hundred dollars! :-)

Well there you have it folks invest in Math-U-See for your kids college fund :-)

just kidding, it is a good investment though for higher grades in college :-)

Blog Review

Christy over at “Training Hearts At Home“ just posted up a review of Math-U-See

Here are a few highlights,

There are no cute, colorful illustrations with MUS like some other curriculums, but for us that isn’t even an issue. Sure that might be more ‘pretty’ to look at, but in my opinion there’s nothing to distract my children’s attention away from the task at hand. And for the quality of learning they’re getting, who CARES whether their paper has cute little bunnies on it or not?

*mental note, never add bunnies to Math-U-See no matter how cute they are :-)

Overall our experience has been wonderful with Math-U-See. Never have we gone looking for something different and hopefully we will never have a need to. This is our 6th year with MUS and all of our children have a strong foundation in math that continues to build each and every year we use Math-U-See

“Smiling Ear to Ear”

My dad got a “thank you” email a few days ago with this to say,

Thank you so much for the wonderful blessing Math-U-See has been to our family. I am a Math challenged Mom and without Math-U-See I know our homeschool life would not be nearly as harmonious! I am always singing the praises of MUS to other homeschoolers!

I tracked down her blog and found some great pictures, here are a few with some quotes.

Here are the kids proudly posing with their math Curriculum for the year!

I am behind the camera SMILING ear to ear! Math Phobic Mom’s kids LOVE Math! HOOORAY!!!! -Jamin
