Ask Steve - Question Six

Steve responds to Danielle’s question from the forum,

I have three wonderful children, ages 4, 7, and 9.I am currently using Saxon Math 2 and 3 for my 7 and 9-year olds. My seven year old is going into the third level of Saxon, and is stong in her addition, but not subtracting skills, (even single digits), and my 9-year old is very strong with his addition, semi-strong with subtraction, weak on multiplication, and yet, he gets division. I don’t get it! I’ve done everything that Saxon has told us to do, and yet, I feel like they are both (particularly him) weaker on some of thier basic skill-sets.If I switch over, where do I start? Am I going to be at a disadvantage because they have not done REALLY long addition and subraction, like you get to in the latter part of both of your first books?Part of my dilema is that I just started homeschooling in January, and they were in 6 different schools prior to that. You can see why this is such a pickle. Thank you for responding!

That’s it for the first round of questions from the forum, from the responses I’ve gotten this has been a success and we will be doing more in the weeks and months to come. Thanks to everyone who asked a question and if you would like to ask one yourself visit our forum.

Ask Steve - Question Five

Steve answers thpianoldy’s question from the forum,

Steve, As a homeschooling mom of a hearing disabled/learning disabled child, I don’t much use the “points-off” system when he gets a problem wrong. We just keep at it until he does get it. However, being required to keep accurate records, how would you grade a typical test?

By the way, thank you so much! My children actually like math now. I actually have to make them get their other work done first, or they would just do math for three hours!

Ask Steve - Question Four

Here is Steve’s response to Kaysandee from the forum,

I have your Algebra I and Geometry courses for my high school students. In your opinion should average students be able to view your videos and then work their problems (in workbook) independently? I know their success is dependent upon multiple factors including how closely they pay attention to the DVD, but my usual reply to them when they complain of “not understanding” is go back and watch the lesson again and see if you can figure it out. Am I being too rigid - should I offer more help?I am not an expert in math and I haven’t been all the way through the DVD’s myself, but from what I have watched it is graphically explained and the students should be able to be self-sufficient in working through their workbook. Please advise, thanks.

Ask Steve - Question Three

Steve answers Shannon’s question from the Math-U-See forum.

I am a homeschooling mom of two teenage children (son 16 and daughter 13). This year they both took Saxon Pre Algebra and did pretty well. Math U See was recommended to me by a friend. I believe my son could really benefit from the program. I have given both children the pretest. My son did well however had some difficulties with fractions (Epsilon). The next day he took the competency exam and I noticed there are some problems he couldn’t do (word problems). Does this mean he has learning gaps? I just don’t want to send him backwards too much.

My daughter on the other hand did quite well with the pretest. She has also took the Epsilon compentency. She missed 4 in all. The next day I made her take the Zeta compentency and she missed 3. Where should she begin?

Any help would be appreciated as I am anxious to start the program, just needing help where to begin.

Ask Steve - Question Two

Answering this question from Mathwiz posted on the forum,

Please help me! My daughter will not do her math. I assign her 6 pages a day (she is homeschooled) and tell her she can not do anything fun untill her math is done, but she either forgets or loses focus. I know she has the ability to sit down and do something like this beacause she does all her other school work… do you have any suggestions for making math more fun/understandable?

Ask Steve - Question One

Answering Genevieve’s question from the forum

Good afternoon!I need some advice to help my 9 yo daughter with her facts (add/sub/mult). We drill but she still chokes on the easiest of them. She can do the problems, she just seems to delay when put on the spot. I had the same problem & do not know how to address it without exasperating her, especially since I can’t do it myself ). I’m also wondering if it’s an issue I need to worry about. Oh, I forgot to mention that she is primarily a kinesthetic learner, secondary is visual.

From the Forum

Thought I would post this great comment from the Math-U-See forum.

**************************************************

We have a 4-year-old daughter who will be homeschooled and has been blessed with starting her math with Math-U-See and I have been blessed by finally having a fondness for Math after all of these years. She is in the Primer - some lesson in the 20’s. We did solving for unknown a few weeks ago and you would have thought we were playing a game she LOVED it. Her latest thing has been having me pretend to be “Mr. Demme” while she goes to “Math school” like the other kids in the video….when she’s done she tells me (as Mom) how much fun Math was.

Is Algebra this much fun?  Cheesy
