Ask Steve - Episode 12

Steve answers this question from our forum.

I have three questions. One would be, how much should I be requiring of him now as he heads into the Jr. High years? I have down 30 minutes a day for math. We watch the video together if it is a new lesson and I go over the new material to make sure he understands it. He is doing well. Often times he will show no problems with the new materials and we will skip B and C and go straight to the cumlative pages.

Ask Steve “Episode 9? Am I Behind?

Steve answers a question from the forum.

Steve,
I homeschool three special needs kids. My oldest is 14 yo (last month) and is mid-way through Delta. We will be continuing over the summer hoping to finish so we can start the next book for 8th grade next year. However, that still puts us a whole book behind for high school. I would like to have her do pre-algebra for 9th, algebra 1 for 10th, geometry for 11th and algebra 2 for 12th. How can I make that possible? Do I skip a book or combine books next year? She likes MUS by the way!

Ask Steve “Episode 8″ Fine Motor Skills

Steve answers Tracey’s question from the forum

Hi!
My ds (5) is starting the Alpha series and doing quite well with the concepts and catching on quickly. His fine motor skills are NOT quite up to his comprehension level! Should I write the numbers out for him or let him struggle to get them on the paper?

Ask Steve - Question Five

Steve answers thpianoldy’s question from the forum,

Steve, As a homeschooling mom of a hearing disabled/learning disabled child, I don’t much use the “points-off” system when he gets a problem wrong. We just keep at it until he does get it. However, being required to keep accurate records, how would you grade a typical test?

By the way, thank you so much! My children actually like math now. I actually have to make them get their other work done first, or they would just do math for three hours!

Ask Steve - Question Four

Here is Steve’s response to Kaysandee from the forum,

I have your Algebra I and Geometry courses for my high school students. In your opinion should average students be able to view your videos and then work their problems (in workbook) independently? I know their success is dependent upon multiple factors including how closely they pay attention to the DVD, but my usual reply to them when they complain of “not understanding” is go back and watch the lesson again and see if you can figure it out. Am I being too rigid - should I offer more help?I am not an expert in math and I haven’t been all the way through the DVD’s myself, but from what I have watched it is graphically explained and the students should be able to be self-sufficient in working through their workbook. Please advise, thanks.
