Today, One Web Day and Autumn

Happy One Web Day!

one web day

OWD is a day to focus on a key value that the internet brings to our lives. One of the benefits of the internet is to allow people to share experiences with others who have a common interest, with this blog the common interests are math and homeschooling and I’ve enjoyed reading your blogs over the years. I blogged about OWD a two years ago and highlighted the changes in the Math-U-See website over the years. Since that blog post we have continued to add new features to the website, all of which are intended to increase interaction and the sharing of experiences.

We have added a forum, started an email newsletter and added video to our website.
Math-U-See has also joined facebook and twitter and continued to blog and comment on your blogs.

These features brought to you by, the internet :-)

Today is also the first day of Autumn!

first day of fall

One great way to celebrate the changing of a season is to take a field trip. I was perusing your blogs today and read a great field trip report from the Wayzley Academy. They visited the Hancock Shaker Village, go visit their blog and check out it out.  :-)

What is your favore part of Autumn?

Math-U-See Happy Dance!

This is what a Math-U-See Happy Dance looks like :-)

Thanks to “Pages of our Life” for letting me post the video :-)

The other day we received our new math books from Math U See. My youngest was so excited he grabbed his and started dancing! I asked him if I could video him and he said, “Sure, Mom!”. This was so funny! It just goes to show that Steve Demme has done a great job instilling a love for Math.

Golden Acorn Homeschool Says - “Eat Your Math”

I was reading your blogs and found this great post by “Golden Acorn Homeschool” on how to sneakily teach math with snacks.

As we were about to tackle math this morning, the kids requested a snack. Never mind that they *just* ate breakfast! These kids are growing and they have growing appetites. :-) I decided to give them some goldfish crackers and use the snack as a learning opportunity. Mostly for the girls, but even Super-boy got a kick out of doing “Goldfish Math.”

For the girls, I gave them the Math-U-See blocks and some number flash cards along with a bowl of goldfish for each of them. They pulled a card from the pile, or a block, and matched the crackers to the number. If they counted correctly, they got to count again while eating them. Sneaky mommy! All that counting and number recognition disguised as a snack!

You Will Survive

Saw this on “Pages of our Life” and had to pass it along, so to all you homeschooling moms out there, enjoy! :-)

Living in a Block Town

I received this email today from Kim,

Our kids Hannah (8) and Jacob (10) had lots of fun building a town with the Math U See blocks.  They could tell me the area, the length of the roads and dimensions of their house.  They completed their “town” with Lego men and BIG RIG vehicles.  What a great way to reinforce the math concepts they are learning.

WHO SAID THOSE BLOCKS WERE ONLY FOR MATH?
