Ask Steve - Question Three

Steve answers Shannon’s question from the Math-U-See forum.

I am a homeschooling mom of two teenage children (son 16 and daughter 13). This year they both took Saxon Pre Algebra and did pretty well. Math U See was recommended to me by a friend. I believe my son could really benefit from the program. I have given both children the pretest. My son did well however had some difficulties with fractions (Epsilon). The next day he took the competency exam and I noticed there are some problems he couldn’t do (word problems). Does this mean he has learning gaps? I just don’t want to send him backwards too much.

My daughter on the other hand did quite well with the pretest. She has also took the Epsilon compentency. She missed 4 in all. The next day I made her take the Zeta compentency and she missed 3. Where should she begin?

Any help would be appreciated as I am anxious to start the program, just needing help where to begin.

Ask Steve - Question Two

Answering this question from Mathwiz posted on the forum,

Please help me! My daughter will not do her math. I assign her 6 pages a day (she is homeschooled) and tell her she can not do anything fun untill her math is done, but she either forgets or loses focus. I know she has the ability to sit down and do something like this beacause she does all her other school work… do you have any suggestions for making math more fun/understandable?

Ask Steve - Question One

Answering Genevieve’s question from the forum

Good afternoon!I need some advice to help my 9 yo daughter with her facts (add/sub/mult). We drill but she still chokes on the easiest of them. She can do the problems, she just seems to delay when put on the spot. I had the same problem & do not know how to address it without exasperating her, especially since I can’t do it myself ). I’m also wondering if it’s an issue I need to worry about. Oh, I forgot to mention that she is primarily a kinesthetic learner, secondary is visual.

Alli sent me this picture of her son and it was to cute not to share, enjoy!

I just wanted to share this picture of my son. We were supposed to be building the number 412, but we both got a little distracted and ended up playing. He wanted to make one for everyone. :)

Thanks! We’re still loving MUS! Â
