Ask Steve - Question Four

Here is Steve’s response to Kaysandee from the forum,

I have your Algebra I and Geometry courses for my high school students. In your opinion should average students be able to view your videos and then work their problems (in workbook) independently? I know their success is dependent upon multiple factors including how closely they pay attention to the DVD, but my usual reply to them when they complain of “not understanding” is go back and watch the lesson again and see if you can figure it out. Am I being too rigid - should I offer more help?I am not an expert in math and I haven’t been all the way through the DVD’s myself, but from what I have watched it is graphically explained and the students should be able to be self-sufficient in working through their workbook. Please advise, thanks.

This video answer was great. I have 3 teens (2 boys and a girl) who are in Algebra 2, Geometry, and Stewardship and I don’t do anything with them in math except grade tests. I get the occasional twinge of guilt when someone asks me how much time we spend in math each day and I don’t have an answer. My kids simply do the work and turn in tests to me - they’re all getting 90% and above on them. This program was a God-send when Algebra came along because I wasn’t nearly as good a teacher at the upper level math as Steve is. Thank you so much. It means the world to me to still be able to teach them hard subjects at home and independent thinking at the same time. Besides, the boys are thankful to have a subject where they don’t really “need” mom to help now that they’re becoming men! I’m thankful to encourage their manhood in this way. They’re doing a fine job growing up and your program is helping to accomplish that goal. Thanks again.
