Weekly Wednesday Word Problem

Brad was sitting in church the other day and noticed the colorful ceiling tiles. Being an energetic lad he figured out how many total tiles there were on the ceiling.  From the back to the front there were 108 tiles and from side to side there were 74 tiles.  He estimated that each ceiling tile was a 1′ by 1′ square.  Figuring out the area of the ceiling was easy for brad so he then decided to figure out the hypotenuse of the room.  Can you help Brad figure this one out?

Math-U-See Rep Highlight

Math-U-See works with regional representatives to meet the needs of the customers. The reps travel to homeschool conventions, answer questions relating to using Math-U-See and they handle the individual product orders for their specific region.

Today’s Rep highlight is Susan Crothers from McCook Nebraska.

Here are a some questions we asked Susan…

MUS Blog - How did you first come in contact with Math-U-See?

Susan - A friend of our Pastor’s called one day. She loves to examine curriculum to see what learning style would go best with that style of teaching. She said to Craig (our Pastor) everyone in your homeschool group should use Math U See and Susan should sell it. And that was that! And here we are 10 years later. When I went to my very first homeschool fair I was already a vendor.

MUS Blog - Tell us about the first time you met Steve Demme.

Susan - It was at the Math U See rep gathering. He sure was taller than I thought he would be. I walked right up to him, because of course I knew what he looked like. And he said… you must be Susan and had some cute comment to make us all laugh and ease the introductions. Which is so like him.

MUS Blog - What do you like best about working with MUS?

Susan - I never tire of hearing how much Math U See has helped a child and made it possible for a Mom to know they can teach math with ease. I love being able to help the families reach their goals. Helping them with Math U See is one way to make it possible to train up their children in the way they should go.

MUS Blog - Do you like cheese?

Susan - Do I like cheese? Well… yes I do.

MUS Blog - Give one fun memory of your time with MUS

Susan - One time at a restaurant with Steve Demme, Dan Sinclair (the CA rep) another vendor and several others of us. Dan and Steve played a joke on the other vendor, Andrew (who is a friend) and I wondered how we would stop laughing. We laughed so hard my stomach hurt and wondered what other people thought about all of us out of towners. We truly have had many fun times together with Steve over the years. There is no questions that Steve loves life!

The Crothers have been working with Math-U-See for around 11 years now and their region includes Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming and South Dakota. I had the opportunity to visiting them on my way to Alaska and I had a great time seeing the Math-U-See operation as well as singing in their kitchen as we made enchiladas. Fun times and good memories.

Weekly Wednesday Word Problem

The bear went over the mountain,

A bear named Fred climbed Mt. Logan (the highest point in Canada) the mountain is 5950 meters high.  The problem is Fred is an American bear from Alaska and only knows American measurements.  If one meter = 3.28 feet how high is Mt. Logan in feet?
Bonus, why did Fred go over the mountain?

Weekly Wednesday Word Problem…

A wise man once said, “5 out of 4 people don’t understand fractions” well today we will see if he is right. If you’ve been through or taught Epsilon then this problem should be an easy one for you. Ready? here you go…

At her 17th birthday party Kelsey, who loves pizza challenged Riley to a pizza eating contest. Kelsey ate 3 pieces of a pizza that had been cut into 8 slices and Riley only ate 1 piece of a pizza that had been cut into 3 pieces. Both pizza’s were round, Riley’s pizza had a diameter of 10 inches while Kelsey’s pizza had a radius of 5 inches. Who won the eating contest?

Bonus Question, How much pizza did they eat?

New Math-U-See Review!

Math-U-See along with many other curriculum occasionally gets reviewed by people, magazines and web sites. A review of Math-U-See’s elementary math curriculum was just published on website of “The Old Schoolhouse Magazine”

The review covers Math-U-See’s elementery levels from Primer to Zeta. The review was written by Heather Jackowitz who does a great job explaining how Math-U-See is used along with personal testimony to how it works. Jackowitz also goes into great detail about each aspect of how Math-U-See is used. To read the review click here.

Weekly Wednesday Word Problem…

Ethan and Eric were riding to Alaska on their motorcycles. On their trip they drove through from Des Moines Iowa to Mc Cook Nebraska. They rode a distance of 419 miles, traveling at an average of 60 mph how long will it take them to get there?

This word problem like many word problems in the books are about real people and sometimes, real events.  To see the latest updates of our Alaska trip click here.

Congratulations to Charles and Jan for getting the correct answer on last weeks word problem!  Who will be the first to answer today’s?

Remembering the “old days”…

I was just thinking about the good ol days of Math-U-See.

Back when the books looked like we made them ourselves, wait we did :-) Back when Greek letters were just used in advanced math equations and also back when my dad would dress up as mac the muskrat and sing the skip count songs himself. Yup its true, whiskers, furry arms, pink tail and everything.

Luckily for him we dont have any digital pictures of that event but what we do have is the “original” Mac the muskrat skip count songs.

They are available in the downloads section, just scroll down to the bottom and you can hear Steve Demme singing the skip count songs with his voice speeded up.

Speaking of Steve Demme, it’s his birthday today so leave a comment and wish him a happy birthday!
